In addition to all this, flexi-rods are often very affordable and can easily be found in most beauty stores or even regular supermarkets. They come in packages of 10, 20, or even 30 rods with various lengths and widths to help you make different types of curls. You can easily find ones that will fit your hair best and look cute.
There is nothing better than having good-looking hair all the time. If you are someone who likes to curl their hair often, you can benefit from this heatless and super easy curling method. So let’s go over the steps and see what you need to do to curl your straight hair using nothing but flexi-rods!
How to Use Flexi-Rods on Straight Hair
If you have straight hair, you know that curling hair is not always the easiest task. Sometimes the hair just doesn’t want to cooperate, and other times you make mistakes while styling it because you do not have the proper technique!
When I got my first pack of flexi-rods, I did not know how to apply them to my hair properly. All I did was twist and turn my hair around hoping that something good would come out of it. It took me a while to master using the rods, but once I did, I realized that I wanted to share my experience with you and help you avoid making the same mistakes that I made.
So I will give you a quick and simple guide to understand how flexi-rods work, how to prepare the hair, and how to apply the rods to your hair. Believe me when I say this: You will never go back to heat styling your hair once you try out this effective and easy method that includes just six steps. Let’s get right into it and see what it is all about!
Step 1. Prepare Your Hair
The first thing that you need to do is wash your hair and make sure that it is completely clean before you apply the flexi-rods. You do not have to have freshly washed hair when you use these rods, but I just think that they work best on this type of hair.
If you apply the rods to greasy hair, you may not get the results you are looking for.
So it is settled: You should begin by washing your hair using a good shampoo, adding some leave-in conditioner, and maybe even applying some curl-activation serum or oil. Using products that are meant to enhance curls can help you achieve your desired results.
When you are finished washing, you should wrap your hair in a soft towel and let it sit like that for a while before you towel-dry it. You can also leave it to air-dry, but only to a certain degree — you want your hair to be at least damp when you apply the rods.
Step 2. Detangle Your Hair
The next step includes detangling the hair using a nice brush that will not pull on it. You can use a boar bristle brush as they are always great for detangling hair without causing any hair loss. Detangle your entire hair from the roots to the ends before you move on to the next section.
Step 3. Section Your Hair
Depending on how long and thick your hair is, you should divide it into smaller sections that will make the hairstyling much easier. There is no right or wrong here — make as many sections as you want before moving on to the next step.
Step 4. Roll Up Your Hair in the Flexi-rods
This is the most important part of this guide, so pay close attention! First, you need to decide on the type of curls you want and use the appropriate rods for them. If you want to get large curls similar to waves, you need to use thicker rods. If you want to get curls that look like ringlets, you can go with thinner rods.
Take one section of hair and place the rod at the ends. Start curling the hair around the rods, and with that movement, start moving the rod upwards.
Essentially, you are wrapping the hair around the rod to the point where you want the curl to start. You do not need to go all the way to the roots if you do not want to.
When you are done wrapping, you need to push the ends of the rod towards one another and press the rod towards the head so that you secure it in place. You should repeat this process for all sections. It can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to roll up every section of hair, but the process is not too tiring.
Step 5. Wait It Out
Once you have the rods in your hair, what you need to do is wait for the curls to set. I recommend that you apply the rods just before bedtime and sleep with them in your hair. That is how I get the best results, and I think it might work for you as well!
If you do not want to sleep with the rods, you can set your hair during the day (that is, if you’re just staying home) and wait at least three hours before taking them out. If you take them out earlier, your curls won’t be as defined.
Step 6. Put the Finishing Touches on Your Curls
After waiting it out, you only need to take the rods out and style the curls. When you first take the rods out of your hair, your curls will look intense. If that is the look you are going for, great, but if not, what I do is gently finger comb my curls to make them less intense and more natural-looking.
You can also apply some hairspray to keep the curls in place. At best, you should expect to have curls in your hair for two or three days, and they will only get better as time passes!
FAQs on Flexi-Rods
Now that I have told you how to use flexible curling rods on straight hair, I want to give you a couple more pieces of information that I think you need to know. Here they are:
How many flexi-rods do I need for a full head?
The answer to this question depends on how long and thick your hair is. It is safe to assume that you will need about 30 flexi-rods to curl all of your hair, but if you have a lot of hair, you can get a bit more rods just in case!
Are flexi-rods bad for your hair?
Flexi-rods can indeed be bad for your hair if you do not apply them properly or if you do not use quality rods. If you purchase any flexi-rods and try applying them to your hair without knowing exactly how to do it, you can experience hair pulling and even hair breakage.
This is why I recommend that you read my guide with the utmost attention — it can help you save your hair from damage and it can save you a lot of trouble!
